Insight Medbotics appoints Abhijit Saxena as CTO

HAMILTON, ON (December 5, 2023) — Insight Medbotics, a medical device company combining the accuracy of MRI with the precision of robotics, is pleased to announce that Abhijit Saxena has joined the company as Chief Technology Officer.

Insight Medbotics develops MRI-guided robotics that combine better accuracy, speed, and efficiency to bring minimally-invasive access together with the insights that only MRI can provide. The company’s MRI-compatible robot, IGAR, has clinically demonstrated its use for breast cancer patients and announced an FDA 510(k) clearance for breast biopsy in September. With that approval, IGAR became the first and only robot of its kind to achieve this clearance for use in MRI, one of the most challenging hospital environments. Other potential product applications include targeted therapeutic delivery and device placement.

Abhijit Saxena brings 14 years of experience developing complex, innovative medical device products with deep expertise in medical robotics. He launched and scaled multiple products across global markets. His diverse portfolio spans surgical robotic, navigation and planning technologies in neurosurgical and orthopedic applications, as well as robotics and AI-based data analytics platforms in neurorehabilitation. At Insight Medbotics, he will oversee technology development, leading teams in engineering, quality assurance, regulatory and manufacturing operations.

Prior to joining Insight Medbotics, Mr. Saxena was director of engineering at Intellijoint Surgical Inc., senior director of R&D at Bionik Inc., and held progressively senior engineering leadership and mechatronics development roles at Synaptive Medical Inc. He has successfully scaled multiple engineering teams, and overseen portfolio development for a range of products that transform raw innovation into regulatory clearances, product adoption, and additional revenue streams.

“Robotics, MRI, and AI encompass three of the most exciting large-scale technology trends in healthcare, ranging from more accessible MRI technologies to the potential for AI to increase efficiencies for radiologists. It’s exciting to join Insight Medbotics as the IGAR robotics system capitalizes on these macro trends by acting as the missing link to bring their potential together for precision medicine. I look forward to working with Fazila and the growing team as we build an innovative, fast-paced, and collaborative engineering culture that delivers meaningful impact to patients and clinicians.”

“I’m delighted to welcome Abhijit Saxena to Insight Medbotics on behalf of the entire team. His expertise in medical robotics—combined with his experience in technology strategy, people leadership, and operational planning—will accelerate our path to making more targeted care available for patients. Together with Chair Dean Mosca and the Board of Directors, I look forward to working with Abhijit.”
~ Fazila Seker, CEO and member of the Board of Directors

Insight Medbotics was created as a start-up company by the Centre for Surgical Invention and Innovation (CSii), and MDA.
